A Common Sense Conservative Choice

MikeExperienced Businessman

With over 30 years of business experience, Mike Holmes knows the value of hard work. He started working in the agribusiness industry at an early age. Mike has been a salesman, a timber farmer, a business owner, CEO for a multi-million dollar company, and House District 31 Representative for the current term 2014-2018. Mike on the Issues

I am proud to represent the residents of House District 31. Here are some of the issues I have been working on in Montgomery this session. – Mike

A HAND UP FOR MILITARY VETERANS IN ALABAMA: As part of the House Republican Caucus Flag, Family, and Country 2018 agenda, we in the Alabama House have passed a fist full of bills designed to give more recognition and more support to our Alabama Veterans. These bills range from free admission to our State parks, all the way up to significant tax breaks for employers that hire certain qualified veterans in their businesses. Some of these haven’t passed out of the Senate and on to the Governor as of this writing, but we are optimistic that most or all will become law this session.

PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE: HB59 stiffens penalties for domestic abuse violators, while HB57 added murder in the presence of a child 14 or under to the capitol offense list, including the death penalty in extreme cases. Additionally, HB245 enhances criminal penalties for human trafficking violators.

STAND YOUR GROUND LAW: HB34 confirms the right already granted by the U.S. Constitution, 2nd Amendment to bear arms on church property as part of an overall defense against domestic terrorism.

COMMON SENSE BUDGETING: The Education Trust Fund budget and all the necessary education appropriation bills unanimously passed the full House on Tuesday, February 14, 2018. The bill provides an across the board raise of 2.5%, and provides a significant increase in funding for several other critical “in the classroom” line items. We have the revenue available to support this budget and expect it to be passed in the Senate, and then on to the Governor for enactment.
